lazy asses
By shag carpet bomb • Feb 23rd, 2008 • Category: Horseshittery, Racializationi give up on the u.s. left. we were having some discussion of racism and i pointed out that there is racial bitory/prejudice (individual level behavior) and there is structural racism (which isn’t necessarily about people having bad ideas about blacks or mexicans, etc. etc.) well, what came out of that was that it turns out that a bunch of really smart people don’t know fuckall about structural oppression. jesus fuck christ on a broken pogo stick already.
also, i give up on leftist men as, for the most part, incurably sexist fuckstains who like to expound on the reasons for this and that when it comes to gender but admittedly know fuckall about feminist research on the topics.
then i read this gem:

“economic” is such a big umbrella. My sense is that one of the big differences between the black poor and the white poor is that blacks are much more likely to wind up in prison than whites, that will definitely impact their ability to get work and the kind of work they’ll be able to get. So, the effect will look economic…but the cause is racial prejudice.

are we fucking kidding me? are we fucking kidding me? obviously, we are not fucking kidding me. we are fucking serious. how people on the left can sit there and blah blah blah about shit that they personally do not know and then can’t be arsed to go read up on to fucking learn… they read someone say “structural racism” or “structural oppression” and blah blah magically infer what it means. never mind that men and women of color have spent lots of effort and time reading and teaching and raising consciousnesses (? sp?) about these issues. never mind that white women have done so in the context of gender oppression. never mind never mind never mind. we don’t have to learn jack because we are privileged white leftists who like to sit around and assume we know everything and that we don’t have to learn from the men and women of color who’ve busted their asses to explain what structural racism fucking is.
blah fucking blah blah.
why we can’t get anywhere… that’s why. a bunch of lazy asses is why. oh: and cheap ass motherfuckers to boot.
happy saturday fuckers. I feel much better having gotten that off my chest.

Sorry, I have to say it, no dialectics, no history. “Isolate”! “Cause”!
As though slavery did not precede the ideology of racism. Historically.
My favorite example for structural racism would be the consequences of neoliberal urban policy. By policy and law squeezing working class and above all poc working class out of U.S. cities. The law and policy fairly consistent application of “market forces” to housing and consistent in all the so-called world-class-cities. With particular racist outcomes in the U.S. Thanks to slavery, becoming share-cropping and prison-labor driving migration to urban centers. Deindustrialized and impoverished by competitive compulsion to escape social-service paying taxation. Criminalized by loss of jobs and services. Expelled, usually less blatantly than in New Orleans, by housing “markets.” Displaced by the “creative class.” Once slavery and colonialism set racism in motion, constantly intensifying capitalism constantly intensifies racist structures.
But then I like concepts I don’t immediately understand because they challenge me to think them through and apply them. You can’t asses a concept by reducing it to a handful of familiar concepts and saying, Nope, not a familiar concept!
