training journal, 08.02.28, 1 year anniversary and ketchup packets edition

I’m just working and reading Matilda’s (AKA MAtt Bernstein’s) edited collection of essays, Nobody Passes. I’ve enjoyed it so far, though M’s distaste for academia irritated a wee bit — though I surely understand it. I guess I’ve been sheltered. I can’t imagine why anyone would think that Bernstein has to have a degree to say anything important — particularly on a topic like this. I can understand that certain environments can be pretty snobby about that sort of thing. Still, I think I’ve been lucky and rarely exposed to it and don’t pay attention to it or notice if I have. heh.
Oh! One exciting thing, for me: I’m taking off tomorrow afternoon for a weekend to … wherever. This is something I used to do when I was younger. Just take off. Kids got in the way of that. Then, working my ass off trying to find gigs and jobs. After a year — yes! a year ago, this shaggy bitch was driving to this crazy ass town on a wild ass ride in the middle of the night and all through the day. It’s been a year. Wow!
Today, I’m lead developer for 2 of the division’s biggest Web sites, getting management and PiMP training, and getting officially certified in PHP — on their dime.
Funny enough, I unpacked some stuff dredged up out of storage. Oh lawdy. I packed some shit, I shonuf did. Why did I pack stuff I couldn’t use or wouldn’t need? Because, like the ketchup packets, sugar packets, sweet ‘n’ sour sauce, you name it that I stash away, I do it because I am terrified of ending up with no home or food or clothes. If a hurricane sweeps through and I’m unprepared, at *least* I’ll have saltines, ketchup, and whatever sample packs they gave away at the grocery store last. Shit, soy sauce will do.
