hip hop wars
By shag carpet bomb • Dec 13th, 2008 • Category: Culture Wars, Racialization, The Hip Hop Warswe’ve been shopping all day. my dogs are tarred. i am lusting for one of those homedics massagers i tried in the store. about four balls roll around and massage your back. i enjoyed it so much, when one of those balls rolled and hit the small of my back, i jumped and made noises like i was going to orgasm. some women were walking by and giggled at me and they all said, ‘isn’t it great?’ :)
so, i treated myself and used my barnes and noble coupon to buy tricia rose’s _the hip hop wars_. years ago, i used to teach sociology of culture and used rose’s _black noise_ for a couple instantiations of the course. sometimes used excerpts of _black noise_ to teach intro courses, citizenship course, and an american civ and culture course. read tricia rose’s ethnographic experiment on black women’s sexuality, _Longing to Tell_, in summer 2007.
I really need to write about that book, _Longing to Tell_. It was the saddest book. I came away thinking that black women, whether straight or lesbian or bi or ?, whether poor, working class, middle class, or upper middle class, whether raised by religious parents or not, rural or suburban or urban, pretty much lead lives that were completely unfulfilled sexually. hard to explain. I couldn’t bring myself to read it again, it was that sad to read, to realize that some many women exist in relationships where they don’t get what they need, don’t even know what they need.
Anyway, when we got home it was 54 degrees in the house and I’m going to go dive under some blankets and read this book for awhile. :)
later.
