training journal, 2009.01.26: gym in a converted warehouse edition
By shag carpet bomb • Jan 26th, 2009 • Category: Belly Button Lint, Training Journalback to training, folks. while i’ve been walking to work everyday, and walking at lunch, putting in about 2.5 - 3.5 miles a day, i decided that i need to get back to lifting. i’d gotten out of the habit after moving here in june because the old gym was a little out of the way. but more: i was too overwhelmed with all the unpacking, painting, organizing, etc. that needed attending to after over a year of being pretty rootless, moving from this temporary situation to yet another. plus, i’d completely forgotten that about a gold’s gym, half a mile away. i never go over that way that much for one thing and when i did, the place was packed and i dreaded having to dick around waiting, waiting, waiting.
the cool thing about this gym is that it is tres urban — oo00oo oh so yuppie — because it’s located in a converted warehouse. i was also worried that it’d be more expensive than the y. but i learned last week, at a going away party for a workmate, that it’s actually cheaper than the y. arrrrsum. photo of the arrrsumness of the gym below.
Wednesday, I have an appointment for one of my free sessions with a trainer — and I think I just might hire someone, once I decide if there is something for which I actually want to train. Like, I ‘ve been thinking about doing some sort of long-distance trip with a canoe. Something. I doubt running a marathon as I’ve not been keen on running since I killed myself with shin splints running in high school. I’d try to eat 600 calories a day, and if I went over that, I’d run and run and run it off. Sometimes running for 2 hours at a time. Pounding away on concrete and asphalt, with the crappy sneakers everyone wore back then. Not good.
Oh! by the way, I’m very excited. I found a book reading group for progressive women and feminists and my first meet up is tomorrow night. Wheee. This oughtter be fun!
So, *drumroll* please:
walking: 4.8 miles (to and from work, lunch hour, to and from gym)
cardio: elliptical trainer, 10 minutes; cross trainer, 20 minutes.
oh, there’s a photo of the yuppie awesomeness of it:
