channel fever
By shag carpet bomb • Sep 3rd, 2009 • Category: Belly Button Lint, vacationit’s getting closer! and closer! time for vacation will be bright ‘n’ early Saturday morning. I am already vacating, now, it’s just that I’m still home. I’ve been lolling about, finishing up that book, Shyness, packing, doing laundry, and otherwise looking for ways to get out of doing a thing. Except that I have to do things, like clean and pack… foo.
I just finished going through the pile of vacation stuff stacked on the table. For two weeks now, I’ve been dropping stuff that we’ll take there on the table: towels, first aid kit, trial sized shampoos i’ve stolen from hotels, baggies of laundry soap, groceries we bought, brand spanking new beach towels we bought, the 20 library books.
update: oo oo. Eric’s article is online now. Just noticed! And that article, in print version, is sitting at the very bottom of my pile of stuff. I stuck Respecting the Middle there as one of the first things demarcating my flag on the territory: this is my pile of stuff I’m taking on vacation. I figured I’d finally get through his long ass article while lounging on the deck soaking up the ocean air. ha ha. if you’re reading Eric, thought you’d get a chuckle out of that.
Meanwhile, I’ve been getting channel fever so bad. Channel fever is a term of art from the Navy. It describes how you get when the ship is approaching shore and you’re getting ready to go on liberty! You lose your mind, forget things, can’t pay attention, have to pee a lot you’re so excited. hee.
It’s not that bad, but the excitement is hyoooooge. I’ve never done this before. I’m going to go on a dolphin watch! The place we’re renting is right on the ocean, and it comes with free rentals: kayaks, canoes, sand cruisers, etc. So, kayaking! And Canoeing. And I’m gonna go parasailing damn it.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaand. I’m gonna go fly in a small plane! fuckme this is so exciting!
and maybe I won’t do any of those things, and it’ll be wonderfully relaxing and practically stress free! Oh! And we’re going to drive down there, the long way, so we can travel the back roads and stop at road side stands and stuff.
oh oh oh! I bought a camera. Of my very own. I have never had my own camera. Not since I was a kid!
and. Oh. my. google. I bought a laptop. no shit. I did. I am going to go experiment with that soon enough. but I really ought to wash the car, which is looking pretty bad. The poor beat up old thing. It’s a 1992, so it’s getting on in years. Need to keep her bathed because the dirty really highlights her age. :)
BTW, these are the books I decided to get for the trip. I still haven’t decided which I will actually take:
The Long Tail (I’m half way through and am reading only b/c it’s an easy read, fun especially for plucking out internet business stupidities to point and laugh at)
The Purity Myth — it was on the shelf at the lib, so I snagged it — by Jessica Valenti. So far, her writing has greatly improved. None of the breathless bloggy writing. But I found it terribly boring, so I haven’t gotten past the first ten pages or so.
Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford. I saw that and thought R might like it. I decided *I* might like it too.
For R, I got Blame it On the Dog which is a cultural history of the fart. yes.
Shadow of the Silk Road — Colin Thurbron, which sounded fabulous in a London Review write up about it.
Zizek’s Politics - Jodi Dean
God and Race in America - Mark Noll — which, I will either get to crow or eat a lovely dish of crow at LBO depending on what I find in this book *grin*
The Wisdom of Crowds — James Surowiecki — because, if I have to hear one more person mention this book I will have to stab my ears out with a rusty knife — plus, I’m hoping it will be fish. barrel.
Ribbon of Sand — which is about the Outer Banks
The Angela Y Davis Reader
The rest, fiction, are mostly from recommendations that have popped up on LBO but also sounded great from book reviews in Harper’s, London Review of Books, and the NYRB.
Rose of No Man’s Land — MIchelle Tea
I Am Charlotte Simmons - Tom Wolfe, which Joe recommended
Map of Ireland — Stephanie Grant
Oranges are the Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson (i’ve already started reading this quirky book but I have just not been in the mood for fiction since all the non-fiction books kept calling my name!)
The Road Home - Rose Tremain
Smila’s Sense of Snow –Peter Hoeg which I read about on this blog, http://amagnificentbastard.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html. I guess I did a search and liked what I read about it. *shrug*
Big Bad Love — Larry Brown
The Romantics — Galt Niederhoffer. I think I read about this in Harper’s and it described this world of the upper class that I found intriguing

ok. i’m beginning to get jealous. all the reading *by choice* sounds wonderful. i miss that. sigh.
I really enjoyed Smilla’s Sense of Snow… although it’s been over 10 years since I read it. I should read it again!
Have a wonderful vacation!
ah, I almost recommended Jeanette Winterson in my email, but I figured either you’d read her or weren’t interested. I have always been a fan of _Written on the Body_, but haven’t read the others.
enjoy the vacating! and no blogging!
