magnificent
By shag carpet bomb • Sep 6th, 2009 • Category: Belly Button Lint, vacationtotally spectacularly magnificently awesome. remind me to expand on how heights and ocean waves finally taught me what sublime means when it’s used in aesthetics. mixture of terror/fear and irresistible lure.
left yesterday. we took a leisurely drive here, stopping here ‘n’ there at tourist traps and overpriced fruit stands. we saw a farm that looked interesting, not sure what it was. turned out to be a specfialty butchery and restaurant with some pretty decent brew. but, i gotta say, this is my fourth time eating grass fed free range meat and i’m not tasting a difference.
got here and lounged around on a porch rocker, i love rockers, reading all the literature we’d picked up at the tourist info center. stopped at the grocery store for things we’d forgotten and then to dinner in an old coast guard station turned restaurant. r’s steak oscar was fantastic. i had a woodfired pizza, which i’ve never had before. can’t say that i’ll bother again. pizza is pizza. i like that line i read on lbo, though. sex is like pizza. even when it’s not fantastic, it’s pretty good. ha ha.
i wanted to wander the aisles of walmart, checking out the shopping habits of the natives and tourists. it was pretty busy at 10 pm. i wanted hurricane candles but fat chance finding them post season. r was in a hurry to get home to the hot tub. whee. for the first time in forever, r drove and i drank ridiculously overpriced drinks made with malibu and pineapple. man, those suckers were goooooood and i got very toasted.
got home, hopped in the tub.
i have to get me some more of hot tubs. hot dayum, those things are spectacular. we were in the thing for like four hours trying to scandalize the elderly women staying at the place next door. heh. i was in the thing about an hour and said, screw this bathing suit. much more fun nekkid. then, totally drunk, i got out for more wine and was galavanting around the deck with my beach towel like a superwoman cape, enjoy the breeze and the moonlight and the waves — endless waves.
then, we ran down to the beach, in the moonlight and i got my first taste of crashing waves on my feet, though I was too drunk to actually go in the water.
then, even sillier, after R stood on one end of the deck, nekkid, and took a leak, i dared him to run out into the ocean nekkid. with the binoculars, i got to watch him saunter out there. i was waving but he didn’t wave back. this morning, i found out it was because he was too busy looking left and right to see if anyone was coming. LOL
you know, all my life i’ve wanted to be on a shore like this for an extended time. the gulf coast doesn’t get waves like this. i’ve been around the ocean near where we live now, but it’s always been ridiculously crowded or winter or a festival was going on in which case, no much opportunity to just hang.
anyway, all my life i’ve dreamed of the crashing waves on the coast imagery like i see when i’ve seen the shore of Maine in movies. so here i am and i realize, wow, it could get annoying after awhile.
i had to laugh. near sunset, we noticed a trellis with fake greens — and pretty paltry bunch of them at that — draped crookedly over it. wonder what that is, i thought. asked r what he thought. of course, it was a wedding. this hodge podge group of people in beach wear, along with a bride and groom dressed in conventional wedding garb. i said to r, “boy, you see this in the movies all the time and hear about ppl whose dream it is to wed at the beach. but no one ever tells you that the sound of the waves crashing is so loud that you can’t hear a dang thing!”
reminds me of my first experience of the empire state building. you see it in the movies — affair to remember, sleepless in seattle, etc. — but no one ever tells you that, to get to the top, you wait in line like a cow for an hour or more, winding up the dang stairs until you get to the elevators.
we went to bed at 3 am. i awoke early, of course, having to pee, so i got to see the sunrise on the ocean, while i watch kayakers in the distance. then, sitting on the porch reading, i watched the seagulls, mesmirized by the waves. i loved watching sandpipers catch the flotsam. then, a flock of brown pelicans showed up and I was amazed at how they dive bombed straight into the ocean. they were going crazy. Then! I saw them: a school of dolphins! I tried taking photos but it’s hard to tell if i got anything.
i’ve been sitting on the deck, feeling the ocean spray. no shit. we are that close to the ocean and the spray travels 3 stories.
i’m never going to leave this place. srsly. i could majorly move here and live out the rest of my days.
